BP Oil Company has one of the deepest oil drilling wells in the history of Off-Shore Oil Drilling. They are drilling over 5000 feet deep into the Gulf of Mexico.
On April 22, 2010... That oil drilling rig exploded killing 11 of the workers onboard, and injuring another 17. Now, at nearly a mile into the water, a ruptured pipe from the oil rig is spewing thousands of gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. This has now be slated to be the worst ecological disaster in U.S. history.
The amount of oil spewing has placed this disaster as 14 or more times larger than the spill from the wreckage of the Exxon Valdez oil spill March 23, 1989. At the time the Exxon tanker ship ran aground, it was loaded with 53,094,510 gallons of oil ( 1,264,155 - 42 gallon barrells) and it ruptured 8 of its 11 cargo tanks. It then spewed 10.8 million gallons of oil in to Prince William Sound.
Valdez Details
With the catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico, we don't really know how many gallons of oil have been pumped into the Gulf. We had first heard 210,000 gallons per day. Today, President Obama addressed the nation in response to this disaster and BP's cleanup efforts, and we now know that there is much more oil pouring into the Gulf than was first reported.
Obama details oil spill response, calls for energy reform
President Obama said the Gulf oil disaster is an epidemic "we will be fighting for months and even years." He also made clear he expects BP to pay all clean-up costs and damages from the massive leak.
